Audience Questionnaire Analysis

This piece information from my questionnaire is of value as it clearly shows majority of those whom were asked enjoy listening to music 10/10 everyday. Furthermore, although it is not seen by the chart, all answers given are over 5/10. This information can help me gage as to how many people would actually be interested in watching a music documentary, and can help me target those specifically who said they love listening to music. Additionally, my target audience consisted of the younger generation and majority of the questionnaires were handed to teenagers, therefore receiving positive feedback about music contributes to the reasons why I have targeted the younger generation. Although it was my aim to get more teenagers to fill it out, it may cause the data to be slightly bias.
These results present the idea that many don't mind grime as genre of music. Prior to handing out these questionnaires, I expected many to say tat stye did like the genre of grime, and that it would be harder to engage the audiences as majority wouldn't like the type of music. However, 40% of those who were questioned stated that they don't mind the genre of music and they could tolerate it. This is an advantage in terms of my documentary, as it'll allow me to try and convince those who don't mind it to think that it is a good genre of music. AS said in a previous post, I want to represent the grime scene in a positive manner, and i intend to persuade the audience into loving the music and seeing it in a new light.

30% of the audience considered grime as a type of music associated with being creative, and the same amount thought it was associated with crime. I expected to be evenly distributed as many people have different opinion. The 20% of those who said other both stated grime as an "intense" type of music. The descriptions of others both had negative connotation, which will not help me to develop ideas on how to make them think otherwise. I don't want people to watch my documentary and leave feeling the same way about grime. I either want them to leave loving grime even more or at least change their minds and give them a more neutral feeling about it. I will try and show particular scenes as peaceful and calm to help those who thought grime was crime related or intense to think otherwise.

Many considered themselves around 5/10 creative. In my option, considering majority of those who were questioned were teenagers, I don't not think that is very positive. I want the younger generation to be inspired by my documentary and feel as if they can go out and do more things that'll help them express their inner creativity. I will definitely now present more creative activities now and will reach out to a wide number of artists to try and attract as many as possible to allow the audience to feel as if they can relate to those in the documentary. Photography, music, art, dance and many other arts will be presented so that in result audiences can find it easier to identify which talent they relate to most.

All of those who were questioned all had a positive outlook on creativity. They all either said they like it or love it, therefore this shows once again that my target audience will enjoy this as it'll present many scenes of creativity. In this sense, I will not have to present any scene that have the intention to change the audiences perception as they all already think that creativity is a good thing and that they enjoy seeing it in documentaries as well as real life situations.

All of those whom were asked gave their opinion of my documentary a 7 or higher. Knowing the audience are intrigued in my documentary and that they like the sound of it, it allows me now to focus on producing the final product instead of changing any ideas or concepts. Furthermore, knowing the audience likes the idea is good because it is more likely for them to enjoy watching it.

Exactly half of those questioned said they would 10/10 watch my documentary once it has been produced. This is positive and encouraging as it shows that there will be an audience that will be eager to watch the documentary and that it wouldn't just be a documentary that people stumble upon. Ensuring that camera shots, sound and editing goes well, the documentary is heading towards a good reception.

One comment said "make it good and interesting" suggesting that audience want to be engage from the outset. One further comment stated that it need no improvements and that it was perfect, suggesting that they are looking forward to watching it and that I should continue the way I am so far. And the final further improvement suggested to create a correct balance between interviews, archive footage and and live footage. This comment implied that to engage them inside th edocuwemtnary, there should be a good distribution of all types of shots and music, allowing it to be dynamic and unpredictable.
Overall the audience feedback was helpful due to the fact that it extremely helped me in kicking off and knowing whether it was the right time to start the production process or whether to assess the plan and ideas before going any further. In general, these comment have convince me start filming an start creating an engaging narrative that'll help promote creativity and change audiences perception on grime.

AMY Newspapaer advertisement

The main purpose of this newspaper advertisement is to persuade the audience to go and watch the documentary. They will often use different colours, wording. images, titles and logos to allow the audience to develop a desire to see the film and find further information than what they were given in the advert.

In this advert, there a many quotations from various other companies saying their opinion on the documentary. Quotations such as " A masterpiece" ""one of the best movies of the year" and "a beautiful tribute" are all positive feedback from other companies, and presenting these good options will I've the audience the impression that everyone thinks highly of the documentary. Not presenting any negative feedback may deter the audience from wanting to watch it, as it is common for audiences to not want to watch certain media products once they have heard a few negative things. Therefore, only presenting good views automatically developed the idea that it is a good documentary.

Another feature of this newspaper advert that issued to attract the audience is a picture of Amy Winehouse in the corner next to the quotes. Using a picture of the subject of the documentary, it allows the audience to understand what the documentary is about without having to read too much of the text on the advert. Fans of Amy Winehouse would automatically attract them to see the movie because she has well recognised artist worldwide, therefore people would not have any queries as to who she is. Furthermore, most people know she is a musician, thus it communicated to the audience that the documentary is musically themed.

A particular feature that is used to catch the audiences attention is the contrast between black and white and pink. Majority of the advert is in black and white, however certain significant words are in the colour pink. This is done to draw in the audience and immediately attract the to those specific details. Words such as "A Masterpiece" "AMY" and "Senna" are all key words that the producers of this advert want the audience to pay attention to. The powerful noun "masterpiece" is a strong word that helps to describe the documentary very briefly, and is enough to interest the audience and persuade them into watching it. "AMY" is of course the title of the documentary, and the other highlighted pink word "Senna" is another critically acclaimed documentary that received many good reviews, therefore saying t hat this documentary is related to another good odium nary will help the audience understand that this must be a good media product.

Additionally, one feature that is overall tell the audience that t is worth watching is the use of two 5 star ratings. Two reviews from two separate companies are shown, and they both give the documentary a 5 star review. Seeing this connotes to the audience that even professional film reviewing companies think that it is a good documentary, and by presenting this, the audience will trust in the fact that it'll be worth their money. Hence, seeing 5 star ratings conveys the best quality of production and a high class documentary.

Initial Crew List

My crew list will consist a variety of people with different roles. I will be responsible for all footage shooting of footage and editing, however there will be other crew members, including those who are starring in the documentary. Majority of those other myself will be those who are artists in this documentary who are there to be documented. All of the production will be produced by me as I know exactly how the document5ary will look and how I want to represent everyone else. Certain figurehead in the band I am documentary will feature a lot as they will provide the most significant information. The list of names below are other members of the crew that will have significant roles in the documentary.

"Scott LaRosa" and "J Steezy" : These characters are the duo who run Indigo Palace. Scott is the main singer/rapper in this group, and J Steezy is the main producer therefore they will have the most valuable information to provide. Information such as motivation, influences, as well as meetings and connection with other people would be more in depth and reliable if it came from them. Following these two on the day to day basis will give us a good look on all the aspects of making music within this group.

Other collaborative the Indigo Palace: Having these other artists who aren't part of Indigo Palace helps to explore the other features of the music industry, and demonstrate to the audience how other people do what they do and what helps them to keep going. As said before, I want to present the whole of the music industry as well other creative people, therefore involving other individuals helps to widen the breadth of talent that I am illustrating.

Different in televison channels

BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation is a publicly funded broadcaster and is the biggest broadcaster in the world in terms of employees. Due to being a publicly funded company, they do not broadcast adverts. BBC's remit is to "inform, educate and entertain" the public. This is often reflected in the types of shows they air. BBC news is one that is aired to inform, and shows such as panorama are shown to educate and more humorous shows such as Miranda and The Great British Bakeoff are there to entertain. BBC have a vision to be the most creative organisation in the world and inspire other to be too. BBC's values include being impartial, honest and trustworthy. They want to be a company that is value for money and have the audience at the heart of all things they do. BBC believe in  and celebrate diversity within countries as well as all around the world. BBC typically target order audiences, between the age range of 30 and older. This is clear in certain shows such as Antique Roadshow, Eastenders and Holby City. However, BBC have expand ed their target audience to target younger audiences, with channels such as CBBC, which is exclusively for morning and afternoons.
Famous documentaries on BBC include Blue Planet, Africa, The Nazis: A Warning From History and Planet Earth. These documentaries are all wildlife/ political documentaries, which match up to their remit as they want to be able to educate the general public and their viewers.
BBC consists of all types of documentaries. They do not show any particular type of documentary,  and their portfolio of types of documentaries is wide. Short films such as Crimewatch falls into the Docudrama category, as they often react scene from actually crimes. Other documentaries Africa fall into the wildlife category, as they document and explore the activities of animals on a day to day basis. BBC also consists of political documentaries with shows similar to Panorama, which expose secrets from both the government as well as large global conglomerates.

Channel 4

Channel 4 are a publicly owned commercially funded broadcaster. The remit of Channel 4 is to be innovative and distinctive, reflect the cultural diversity of UK and inspire change in peoples lives. This is the basis of the shows they present on Channel 4, with shows like My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, and the Paralympics. There brand values revolve around acceptance, inspiring change and presenting alternative views.
The target audience for Channel 4 is people between the ages 18 and 30. This is fairly reflective in the choice of shows they show, as they are particularly youth orientated. Typical shows like The Inbetweeners and Big Brother are shows that would attract younger audiences as they feature younger stars who would attract the younger viewers.
Channel 4 have shown a number of documentaries over the past couple years. All those have been shown reflect their remit and brand values as they present controversial subjects ands topic that are disputed in society. My Transgender Kid presented the increasingly more common issue of individuals who feel they were born as the wrong gender, and showed the journey of their lives and transformations.
A common type of documentary that is shown on Channel 4 are Personal Journey documentaries. These are often documentaries that follow the lives of people struggle to be accepted in society and live trying to be part of a community. These are common documentaries on Channel 4 as they are the types of documentaries that portray diversity in Britain and showing their journey to gain acceptance represents channel 4's remit of celebrating diversity. ANotjehr common documentary that is shown on channel 4 is crime documetnaries, as it puts forward controversial disputes and allows the audience to "change" their option on certain topic, which adheres to their remit, which is to inspire change. Examples of this include Accused: The 74 Stone Babysitter and 9/11, The Falling Man.
Five

Channel 5 is a British public service broadcaster which also airs commercials. It has always been considered the less distinctive channel compared to other channels such as BBC and Channel 4. It is the shortest running channel among the 5 terrestrial channels, since opening in 1997, and has a remit to broadcast a wide range of programmes, as well as broadcasting a sufficient amount of news and current affairs. Out of all the terrestrial channels, this is also considered the most creative, and has undone a variety of brand reconstructions to keep up with the ever evolving needs of viewers.

Channel 5's brand values consist of attracting and engaging audiences in a friendly kind ways, with informal messages on screen such as "welcome back" and "settle in". These general brand values have helped them to develop a wide mass target audience, which has established them as a channel that is for everybody. They have allowed themselves to attract a variety of viewers through bran extensions to 5USA and 5Star.

Channel 5 conventionally show personal journey documentaries such as Extraordinary People. These are don ten shown as they do not want to exclude any members of the public, regardless of what type o lives they live. This is often compared to the types of shows shown on Channel 4, and these documentaries are often popular in audiences as they help to inform them on issues that are present and increasingly common in society. Other types of documentaries shown on Channel 5 include docudramas, as they also help to inform people on current affairs, however this is done in a certain way so they are presented in a more light hearted friendly way.

Overall, I would suggest that my documentary should be shown on BBC. I think this because BBC the biggest channel in Britain and has channels as well as programmes targeted to all types of audiences, furthermore.  this type of documentary would be able to be shown to everyone as it is the first terrestrial channel. BBC consists of BBC 1 2 and 3, and i would say sy BBC 3 is the most accurate channel to broadcast it on as it is tailored specifically to younger audiences. Additionally, as mentioned in a previous post, this documentary is similar to those presented by Reggie Yates, who commonly features on BBC 3, therefore it would be accurate to show similar documentaries on the same channel. Many other documentaries such as Life On Death Row and Hood Documentary are shown on this channel, hence why I think my documentary would fit the criteria.

Similar opening sequences to my documentary

So far in my production process, I have developed an idea that the 5 minutes segment I will document is the opening scene for the documentary. In this opening scene, I will outline the theme of the documentary as well as show the first 2 minutes after the opening credits have finished. This opening sequence will contain snippets of scene further on and will begin with an interview with Indigo Palace. I aim to film footage as accurate as possible and I hope it will resemble the way I have developed in my head.
Reggie Yates is a presenter of many documentaries on BBC, and many of these have similar concepts to my documentary. His documentaries are often him spending a week inside a specific topic area, and he explore the inside information about this topic. He is the presenter as well as the voiceover and interview, which will be exactly what I plan to do. Many of his documentaries have inspired me to make this one, and here are 3 examples that I will use certain features my own documentary.

http://bbc.in/2ctrH3D
http://bbc.in/29nLBKw
http://bbc.in/2984GAE

Initial Equipment List

One primary piece of equipment that I'll need for documentary is a Sony DSLR camera. This will be use instead of any regular camera as it'll produce better quality of picture. I want my footage to be clearer as it'll give the impression to the audience that this is a professionally made documentary and that the budget for it was higher. Furthermore, having a clearer picture for my documentary will be more aesthetically  pleasing for the audience and as a result, they will want to continue watching as it is easy to watch.

Another piece of equipment I will need for my documentary is a tripod. I will need this as it'll help my shots appear more steady. Having still shots will help give my documentary look more professional and clear.  Around half my camera footage will be filmed on the tripod, however at times I will not use the tripod so that it looks shaky. By doing this, it will give the documentary a personal and intimate feel, and will allow the audience to feel as if they are actually apart of the documentary.

Another part of my equipment list will be lighting equipment. As said in another post about mise-en-scene, I said that I'd use lighting to shine on the band members to represent them in a positive manner, and as if they are the "light" in a stereotypically bad genre. Hence, having spotlights will allow me to produce light in certain areas more than others. This may be one of the pieces of equipment I may struggle to access, however I am hoping that where I am shooting majority of my documentary, there will be some lighting available.

Once I have finished shooting all my footage for my documentary, I will need a Macbook/ Mac Desktop with Final Cut Express and Pixelmator to help me edit my footage together. I will need Final Cut Express to help me combine my footage so that I can create a narrative. Additionally to editing on a mac/MacBook, I will also use the computers to access the non diegetic music I will use on my documentary. Final Cut Express is the best platform I am aware of that can easily edit music on top of my footage.

As of now, these are only initial ideas of what I will need for my equipment list, however further on in the production stage, I may discover that I need more equipment. If that does end up being true, I will be sure to add to this current list and explain how I used them.

Mise-en-scene in my documentary

I will use a variety of mise-en-scene features to help establish various representations and make the genre clear in my documentary. As said in previous post, I want to make the band look as creative group of individuals and I want the genre of music they make to not be portrayed as "criminal" or "aggressive". I will use different props and colours, as well costumes and lighting to portray all these representation I aim to create.

During the editing process of my documentary,I will saturated my footage just a little bit to enhance the colours being showing the visual content. By saturating  the footage, it will make footage look more colourful and bright, and naturally this connotes to the audience that they are bright promising individuals. Seeing brighter colours is easier on the eye to the audience, and seeing these colours will  give the audience the impression that the artists are nice and friendly, despite the type of music they make which is commonly associated with crime.

The main theme of the documentary is music and creativity, therefore my primary aim is to also represent the music industry in positive manner. My target audience is those who enjoy music and want to become some sort of artist in the future. Of course there will be a lot of music equipment such as microphones, mixing desks, DJ decks, editing softwares and many more, and these will be present to attract other musicians who enjoy finding out about new equipment they can use for themselves. I will also include other equipment that using associated with music, such as high tech cameras, Apple MacBooks, and art canvas, as this will attract other creative individuals because of the fact that they can see equipment that they use in their own field of work.

If I can gain access to specific light, I will try and use it to my advantage to represent Indigo Palace in a certain way. Although it is uncertain at the moment whether rI will be able to, I will try and use spot lighting and place them in it. This will give the audience the impression that they are the main focus of the documentary so that they pay attention to what they're doing. Furthermore, shining the light on the will represent them as a the "light" in a genre of music that is frowned upon in society.

Many of the scenes in the documentary will contain archive footage of concerns and shows. I have decided to include these scenes as it'll help create a party atmosphere, and during these scenes i will include the reactions from the crown enjoying the show. This will help develop my idea further that the music industry is a positive environment. Seeing people enjoying themselves listening to music will affect the audience as they'll gain a sense of happiness in their mind, and will develop the idea that you can enjoy yourself more and feel relaxed if you're in the presents of music. Additionally, showing these scenes will help get rid of the idea that the music industry is fixed and that artist don't enjoy music as music as they used to, and it will prove that artist still work hard to do what they love most.

Representation In My Video

There will be many different t types of representations in my documentary. During the documentary, Indigo Palace will be the main subject throughout my documentary, and I will aim to represent them in a positive way through a  variety of techniques.

One way I will want to represent the band is hard working. I want the audience to develop a liking for them and see how hard the band work to make as much music as possible. It is often stereotyped that people in the music industry are lazy and that their managers do all their work for them, therefore i want to challenge the common stereotype and prove to the audience that some artist in the modern day music business still work hard. I will try and show this by showing the bad rehearsing regularly, as well as being in the studio making new music as often as possible. Occasionally \I will use close up/extreme close up shots of various band members to show concentration and emphasis the emotions the various artists.

Another representation I wan to make in the documentary is a that music is a positive hobby. I want the audience by the end of the film to understand the filings Indigo Palace ahem about music and  my aim is to help the audience develop the same opinion on music as well. As the director of the documentary, i also feel strongly about music and I feel that it is one thing that can accompany any situation, whether the situation is good or bad. I will try and demonstrate this idea by showing the characters in the audience feeling the energy of music and whenever music is playing, I will show all the characters in a positive mood as a result of the music.

The genre of music that Indigo Palace make is grime/hip hop. This genre of music is often frowned upon in society as it is associated with crime and gangs in both England and worldwide. However I don't want the audience to feel as if this collective of artist is part of a bad culture or society. I want to represent the genre of music as one that is just the same was any other, and I want to eliminate the idea that this type of music is "yobby" or "gangster". I will try and do this by showing the artist who make grime music as nice, humble, polite people who are nice and approachable and aren't people who roam around on the street.

The last representation I wasn't to develop is the image that Indigo Palace are creative in other aspects rather than just music. The overall vibe of my documentary will be one to encourage viewers to be creative and do things that are innovative and original. I will show this idea through scenes of the band drawing, creating posters, dabbling in photography and many of creative activities which widens their portfolio talents. My target audience is those who are interested in art, therefore I want to inspire talented individuals to embrace their gifts and develop them further.

Locations Reece

The topic of my documentary is music and will explore the different processes of making music. It will follow a group of individuals called Indigo Palace for a wee k to see what they get up to and what inspires them. There will be many location that they will travel to, however I have planned particular places to record footage for different reasons.

Relentless Studios NO. 5 Denmark Street, Soho, London

This will be the location that will feature the most in my documentary. The reason for this because majority Indigo Palace's music was recorded there. Thee most popular and biggest song was created, mixed there, as well as the music video being filmed there. Furthermore, almost all of the band members work there, therefore, gaining access to this place would give the audience exclusive access to their everyday lives.
Regardless of Indigo Palace being heavily involve, Denmark Street is famous for all the music talent it  has  hosted on that street. David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, The Sex Pistols and Led Zeppelin all created some of their most famous music on Denmark Street, therefore it has a very rich music background. By having this famous road in my documentary, it will automatically illustrate the music vibe that I am trying to portray. Those who are interested in music will see the location and will associate it with great music icons and culture.

London Victoria Station
One location I will want to include is Victoria Station. This is also an iconic location through the whole of England, and exactly 85,337,996 people entered and existed in 2014-2015. Seeing landmarks setting such as Victoria Station will engage audiences, as it'll be somewhere tat many people have visited before and they'll feel a personal connection to the documentary. If Indigo Palace are seen at Victoria, many people will relate to taking public transport to the jobs and will also feel empathy as they know how it feels.

Insonos Studios
Insonos Studios is the private studio owned by IndigoPalace This is the first studio they have been able to rent out for themselves to record their own music, as well as help other aspiring London artist record their music too. The band were able to buy this studio from the money they've earned so freeform working at Relentless+ their music success. I have decided that this will also be  a location that it will be seen often in the documentary. I have included this as it is a music studio and will help me develop the message I am trying to portray to the audience. I want to represent musicians in a positive manner and that they aren't all lazy. Showing Indigo Palace in the studio often will represent them as hard working and determined t be successful.

This is only an initial location lists, and I am sure that more locations will be established/ thought of as the process develops further.

Research into the documentary process

There 3 key essential stages involved when making a documentary. These 3 stages include, development and pre production, production and post production. These are all essential stages in developing a short film productions.

The pre production stage includes developing a main theme for your documentary as well as a story line, music ideas, camera shot ideas, sounds plans, locations reece, and a brief idea of how the overall documentary will look like. These will all be features that contribute to the way certain people are represented in the documentary, and will contribute to the general quality of  the short film. Certain camera shots, such as low camera angle, can portray some characters as more important than others, therefore planning what shots are required are a key process in the pre production stage. Furthermore, menacing music can help illustrate to the audience that a subject is a negative one, and location can present certain situation as either good or bad. Generally the pre production process is important as it give as it allows production teams to have a base to kick off from.

Another key production process is the actual production process. This is where you conduct interviews with the specialist/ people involved in the subject of your documentary. The production process also consists f ensuring the sound quality is good and that it is easy for audiences to understand and hear what is being said. Establishing shots are taken to help the audience comprehend where the next scenes will be. Cutaway shots are taken of people doing other things so that the whole documentary isn't just the interviewee talking infant of the camera. An example f this may be of a musician playing an instrument whilst their interview plays over the footage like a voiceover. All archive footage and graphics are collected to use as cutaway shots to and all copyrights are cleared for the muse of particular sounds and music. Any other necessary process that are needed to be edited into the documentary are done in the production process as well.

The final stage involved is post production. This involved any editing that s needed. All the scenes recorded are blended together in a particular order so that a narrative is developed and a clear storyline for the audience is established. All voiceovers are edited in so that the running commentary matching the visual content being shown. The final cut is watched over and over again t ensure that it is of high quality and the directors and editors act as the audience so that they can review whether their message is being portrayed correctly.

Of documentary institutions make documentaries with the aim to rise awareness of subject or issues. Whether these issues are worldwide or national, the main aim to to inform and educate audiences about it. Interviews are conducted with specialist so that accurate information is presented to the audience.

Other documentaries aim to explore other cultures that aren't normally presented in the media. These type of documentaries are of ethnographic documentaries are show how other non-western countries live. Some documentaries are simply made for entertainment. Mockumentaries are an example of these, as they are normally comical and have the main aim to make the audiences laugh. However entertainment don't just come in the form of mockumentaries  as they can also come in the form of an observational documentary. These entertainment documentaries re commonly known as human interest documentaries. Another purpose is simply to just uncover the truth behind controversial issue, E.g documentaries about 9/11 or crime documentaries. These type of documentaries often come in the form of docudramas.

The average budget for a professional looking documentary would be between £5000-£75000. The highest ever grossing documentary according IMDb is Fahrenheit 9/11. This hard a budget of $6 million, and in return, gained a gross profit of $199 million. The amount of profit is accurate to the amount of money spent on the documentary. The more money spent on the documentary, the more archive footage that can be gathered, interviews with better quality specialists  can be conducted and the overall quality of the footage will be better.

In my opinion, i believe the greater difficult in making a documentary is stringing together an engaging narrative that also educated audiences at the same time. For a documentary to be engaging, it has to be presented in a natural way without feeling to formal r informative. However it is also vital to incorporate interviews and facts about the topic of the documentary, as well as archive footage and real life images to ensure that the audience gain knowledge, while simultaneous giving the documentary  realistic and intimate feel.
