My Initial Ideas

The decision between music video or documentary.

After conducting research into both music videos and documentaries, I have come to the decision to produce my own documentary instead of a music video.

Although it went well, after producing a music video for my preliminary filming task, I discovered that maybe making a music video is not the best task for me as I found it tricky to recreate similar scenes to the real video. Furthermore, I don't feel that I'd be able to develop creative and artistic ideas to relate to musical lyrics without presenting it a cliche manner.

On the other hand, I feel I'd be better off making a documentary as I have clear idea of what my documentary will be about and I vaguely know how I want the final product to look like. Not only do I have a good idea but I also have the correct resources and people for it. Although this is only coursework, I feel that the idea could be developed and created into a real life televised documentary.

Preliminary Filming Task Evaluation

WHAT WENT WELL:

• Establishing what scenes we were planning to do was convenient. Due to the fact that one person was good at the camera aspects of a video, and the other was keen on acting, the roles were very easy to organise, and because of this, both participants were comfortable with the filming process. Furthermore, the actor was keen on editing and had lots of experience in the software we used to edit. Therefore, the quality of the final product represents the organisation.
• Many of the props used in the video were very accessible. By having all these props available allowed us to gain maximum quality and likeliness for the video. Props such as gas kettle, old fashioned telephones and stoves meant that the accuracy of the footage was good and realistic to the actually video.
• We were able to complete all that we needed to do in one day. Both filming and editing only took a couple of hours, therefore everything as completely within 24 hours. This was good because it meant it was not time consuming and we could continue onto the next stage of our production. 
• The quality of our camera equipment was good. To accompany the DLSR camera, we had a well functioning tripod to keep our shot quality to a high standard and kept the overall product to consistent level. 

DIFFICULTIES WE FACED:

• In one of the scenes we had to recreate, the lighting used was very hard to establish in our own shot. Perhaps this was due to additional equipment the creators of Hello had, but they essentially able to establish this shot a lot easier than were. We tried many techniques such as using  lamps, turning on light partially, however none of them worked. Eventually, we discovered that using the light that creeps from the edge of curtains worked. Although it eventually worked, it proved to be very time consuming and shortened the time we had ti edit. 
• Not until we had finished editing and publishing the video did we realise that a continuity error had occurred.In a scene at the start, it appeared that we turned on the gas on the stove, however in the next scene, the fire appeared to be off. Although it is not completely obvious, it was still an error that could have been easily avoided.

• Once we had completed filming an editing, we had to post our video on youtube so that it was accessible for our teacher to view it. However we could only post it and nobody else could watch it because of copy right issues. Our whole video accumulated to 1 minute and 10 seconds, and due to Youtube's Copyright laws, we were not allowed to post more than 30 seconds at a time of the song in the background. We were able to work around this issue why splitting our video up into 3 different parts and posting them separately so that there were no Copyright issues. 

Preliminary Filming Task

For my preliminary filming task, my partner and i recreated the the video for Hello by Adele. We took the moment from when the music started until the the point where the chorus as about to begin. Or whole video accumulated up to 1:11 minutes.
